St. Mary's has many ministry opportunities for you.

The Ministry of Worship
The Worship Committee meets with the rector to plan for various services throughout the church year. Each Worship Ministry Service is represented at the meetings. In addition to regularly scheduled worship services, St. Mary’s offers special services throughout the year such as Evensong; Advent Lessons and Carols; Ash Wednesday, and St. Francis of Assisi Day with the Blessing of the Pets. Morning Prayer each Tuesday and Thursday, and Bible study each Wednesday at noon were suspended last year, and we look eagerly to resuming these services. Holy Week of Easter and the Advent days leading up to Christmas have their own unique rhythm of activities at St. Mary’s as we prepare our hearts and minds for the commemoration of these Holy Days.

Worship at St. Mary’s is held at 9:15am with the celebration of Holy Eucharist, utilizing primarily Rite II, although Rite I is also used on some occasions.  Worship support is provided a cadre of dedicated volunteers whose functions are outlined below.

Verger: The verger works under the direction of the rector to oversee the direction of the service and manage the various lay ministries that will particpate in the worhsip. The verger is also involved in the training of the chalice bearers, acolytes, and ushers.

Chalice Bearers
: A small group of parishioners licensed by the Bishop to assist the clergy in the distribution of the wine during Holy Eucharist.

Acolytes
: Young people or adults who have a supportive role in the service. Acolytes assist in worship by carrying the processional cross, lighting and extinguishing the candles, carrying the Gospel book and assisting in the collection of alms and the presentation of the bread and wine during the Eucharist.

Lay Readers: Parishioners who read the Scripture lessons appointed for the worship that day. Anyone who enjoys articulating the word is encouraged to volunteer.

Lay Eucharistic Visitors
: sanctioned by the Bishop to deliver Communion to those who are home bound due to illness or infirmity.

Ushers
: Greet and welcome each person as they arrive for worship, seat according to preference, and provide for any special needs during the service. Ushers also assist in the collection of the offering.

Choir
: Parishioners who can either read music or love to sing lead the congregation in the hymns appointed for the service, as well as performing anthems on special occasions.

Altar Guild: Prepares the altar and church for regular services, holy days, and the great festivals of the church such as Christmas and Easter. Preparations for weddings, funerals, and baptisms are also the responsibility of the guild. The guild cares for the linens, communion silver, liturgical hangings, candles, and brass vases which are used in the various services

Flower Guild: Responsible for obtaining and arranging flowers for the altar and the narthex for worship services and other events. Floral arrangements may be donated by parish members as memorials or in thanksgiving, or may come from private gardens.

Sewing Guild:
Informally known as “Sip and Sew”, this group works on projects that glorify God through the hand-crafted beauty present in our church. The most recent project is needlepoint kneelers for the altar rail which will be treasured for their beauty, craftsmanship and religious symbolism.

There is a fully staffed nursery available for Worship services and special events.

The Ministry of Education

Education is one way in which we can become a partner in Christ’s work and St. Mary’s offers a variety of opportunities for studying Scripture and learning more about the Christian life.

Children and Youth

Young people are an integral part of St. Mary’s.   We care for their spiritual growth through Christian Education and Children’s Church and encourage their participation in the full life of our Christian activities such as EYC (Episcopal Youth Community), VBS (Vacation Bible School), and attendance at Camp Beckwith. Those who wish to take a more active role in the liturgy may train as acolytes.ot serve as young readers.

St. Mary’s has worked with the Presbyterian and Methodist churches in the summer to present an excellent VBS for the children, with many of our talented local arts and crafts persons getting involved in the fun and education. Each church takes a turn hosting VBS with all of the churches working together, making VBS a community event.

Adult Education

There are several educational offerings for adults based on differing schedules/needs.

Wednesday  is traditionally a day full of offerings, from a noon Bible study to an evening family-style study group with a light meal served. These activities are on a temporary hiatus but we hope to renew them again soon.

The Cursillo Reunion Group is a small group that meets weekly to hold each other accountable for their spiritual journey.  The group discussion centers on spiritual goals, plans for growth and actions taken to advance God’s kingdom.

The Weekly is our e-mail educational and outreach tool used to keep parishioners and friends updated regarding our congregational life.

The Ministry of Outreach

We strive to follow Christ’s directive in Matthew 25 that we are to “feed the hungry, clothe the naked, welcome the stranger, care for the ill and visit the prisoner.”  St. Mary’s supports a variety of programs designed to minister to those with physical and spiritual needs.

Second Blessings:  Our thrift shop is staffed by church and community volunteers; earnings go to support both local needs and several missions abroad, with a special emphasis on children’s charities.  You may find out more about Second Blessings through the page of this website.

Medical Mission:  Twice-yearly trips sponsored by the Diocese of the Central Gulf Coast.  During a typical ten-day trip, healthcare is provided to thousands of individuals.

Community (ACORN) Dinners:  At Thanksgiving and Christmas, St. Mary’s joins with other local churches in the preparation, serving and delivery of meals to those who might otherwise do without or may simply be longing for some companionship during the holidays.

Men’s Prayer Breakfast:  The Men’s Prayer Breakfast is held every 3rd Thursday of the month at St. Mary’s Parish Hall.  The food and fellowship provide an opportunity for all the men of the community to gather for brief worship and great food.

Women’s Luncheon:  The women’s Luncheon is held every 4th Wednesday and provides a similar opportunity for women to fellowship.   The meetings are held at various restaurants in the area.

Food Bank:   The Christian Service Center Food Bank is a local service organization in Andalusia.  St. Mary’s is active in supplying food to the bank by collecting non-perishable food items weekly, as well as assisting with the direct provision of food to the needy.

Hurricane Katrina Outreach:  Following Hurricane Katrina, St. Mary’s mobilized quickly to act.  The church fed Katrina refugees for a month after the storm, as well as gathered clothing and other badly needed supplies.  In addition, several teams of volunteers traveled to Camp Coast Care in Long Beach, Ms. to assist in the re-building of homes.

United Thank Offering:  St. Mary’s supports the United Thank Offering program,  a national church program to enlarge the circle of thankful people by encouraging daily prayers, offerings and a personal awareness of the abundance of God’s blessings.  We collect our blue boxes and daily place a coin or bill in the box in gratitude for God’s blessings.  The monies are collected on a Sunday designated and then sent to the national church for dispensing as grants to address a variety of compelling human needs.

Episcopal Relief and Development:  Episcopal Relief and Development provides emergency assistance in times of disaster; rebuilds devastated communities and offers long-term program development solutions to fight poverty.

Sasha’s Home:
Sasha’s Home is a seven-apartment facility that houses nearly 40-orphaned children in Gorlovka, Ukraine, was founded by one of St. Mary’s families.  The congregation supports this on-going ministry with prayers and supplies.

Alcoholics Anonymous: This group meets weekly and is an open meeting for women dealing with substance abuse or other addiction issues that have a negative impact on their functioning and/or interpersonal relationships.

Habitat for Humanity:  Our local chapter has just completed their first build, and St. Mary’s has several members that taking an active role in this organization.  Plans are now being made for a second project house for a deserving local family.

Blood Drive:  Each year St. Mary's holds a blood drive.  What better way to show your love to humankind than to share the gift of life.  Your service in this ministry very well could save a lift.  We welcome donors to give and volunteers to help during the drive itself.

The Ministry of Stewardship

St. Mary’s is financially sound with assets that far exceed liabilities.  We encourage all to participate in our stewardship program with an annual pledge, and have used stewardship dinners to provide all of our members with accurate financial information. Over the years, we have been blessed with very generous members, but as always, there remains room for improvement as we strive to meet our goals in these challenging financial times.

We have attached year-end financial statements from 2006, 2007 and 2008. We have also attached our budget for 2009 and the financial report through February 2009.

The Ministry of Pastoral Care and Hospitality

Taking care of each other is a vital ministry that involves each one of us at St. Mary's and is not the sole responsibility of our rector. We are a warm, caring community eager to be of assistance in times of need. A vestry member coordinates  the pastoral care committee and recruits congregation members to assist with meals during illness or following a death, as well as makes home/hospital visits as appropriate.

Bread Ministry: Provides fresh-baked bread to our first-time visitors as a symbol of nourishment and hospitality.

Pentecost Picnic: Celebration held on one of the three most important holy days in the church year. The picnic immediately follows the service and is a much anticipated time of feasting and table fellowship.

Maine Event Lobster Fest: A dual-purpose fundraiser. Proceeds are divided between Wilmer Hall - the Episcopal children’s home in Mobile – and the youth of St. Mary’s to help defray costs of special activities held through the summer. Fresh lobsters are flown in from Maine and our youth prepare and serve this succulent treat with all the trimmings.

Epiphany Tea: A gift from St. Mary’s to the community representing the gifts the Magi brought to Jesus. Since Epiphany is the pinnacle of the Christmas season, all are invited to High Tea complete with king cake and scones.

Second-Sunday Pot-luck: An unofficial fellowship and “feast day” at St. Mary’s – a smorgasbord of culinary delights provided by parishioners for the enjoyment of all.

Supper Club: Held in the homes of parishioners during the months of summer and fall - a memorable way to introduce people to our community – evangelism in a casual setting.

Progressive Supper: A festive Christmas event. We gather together for appetizers before splitting into small groups for the main course and meet back at the parish hall for dessert and tree-trimming. Alternate activities provided for children.

Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper: A chance for the men to shine (and the women to dine!) as we follow the English tradition of ridding our households of fats and meats before Lenten fasting begins on Ash Wednesday. The men of the parish do the cooking and the youth serve.

Pumpkin Patch Fall Festival: Our annual fundraiser – pumpkins for sale, food booths, arts and crafts vendors, a raffle and lots of activities for children. This is a terrific event for the entire family.  Monies raised have gone to support various building projects and disaster relief efforts following Hurricane Katrina.
